INNOVATIVE RESEARCH DEGREE (M.Tech./M.Phil./Ph.D.) PROGRAMMES Admission to the M.Tech./MPhil/ PhD Research Degree (RD) Programme shall be based on the common criteria and all applicants seeking admission to a Research Degree Programme shall be required to appear and qualify in The Research Entrance Aptitude Test (TREAT) conducted by the University.

The Dean (Research & Development) shall identify the vacant seats and issue a notification on the University website, inviting applications in respect of M.Tech./MPhil/ PhD admissions, mentioning the number of seats available.The University shall call for the Applications for Admission normally in the months of April/May and October/November every year.A list of candidates qualifying the TREAT shall be published on the University Website. The eligible and qualified candidates shall be shortlisted for interview by the Research Degree (RD) Programme Admission Committee, on the basis of merit and number of vacancies.Candidates admitted to Research Degree (RD) Programmes on regular basis at APU may be categorized as follows:

Full time

Full time research scholars are those who will be able to commit themselves full-time to carry out their research. Full time research scholars may (if selected), receive a scholarship from the APU Research Grant/ UGC/ AICTE/ Any other sponsoring Institute / Agency or a Teaching Assistantship from the University to cover expenditure on research and living expenses depending upon the availability of funds.

Part time

Part time research scholars are those who are registered and devoting part of his/her time towards the pursuit of M.Tech./MPhil/ PhD degree while discharging his/her employment obligations. There shall be two categories in it, namely, internal-those who are the employees of the Institute and others are External. Provided that candidates who are applying for registration as part-time external students shall be considered for registration only in cases where the Dean (Research & Development) is convinced that effective supervision can be ensured.

A full time candidate may be allowed by the University Research Council to convert his / her registration into part time registration and vice-versa.

The University has rigorous Research Degree (RD) Programmes that aim at honing the research skill, grooming teaching abilities, producing quality research publications and proactive participation in seminars and conferences. Accordingly, the award of RD requires a student to accumulate credits through course work, teaching assistantship, published work and dissertation/ thesis. The duration and credit requirements for M.Tech. , MPhil and PhD Programmes are as under:

MTech

For successful completion of the RD Programme leading to the award of the M.Tech. Degree, a student shall be required to accumulate a total of 60 RD Credits as under:

  • Course Work: 20 Credits
  • Dissertation: 20 Credits
  • Publication: 10 Credits
  • Teaching Assistantship: 10 Credits
MPhil

For successful completion of the RD Programme leading to the award of the MPhil degree, a student shall be required to accumulate a total of 60 RD Credits as under:

  • Course Work: 20 Credits
  • Dissertation: 20 Credits
  • Publication: 10 Credits
  • Teaching Assistantship: 10 Credits
PhD

For Successful completion of the RD Programme leading to the award of the PhD degree, a student shall be required to accumulate a total of 120 RD Credits as under:

  • Course Work: 20 Credits
  • Dissertation: 60 Credits
  • Publication: 20 Credits
  • Teaching Assistantship: 20 Credits

A candidate admitted to the Research Degree (RD) Programme shall be required to complete the prescribed course work in the first to complete his/her admission. Notwithstanding the maximum prescribed duration of the Research Degree Programme, if a candidate fails to complete the prescribed course work in two semesters, his/her admission shall be cancelled and his/her name shall be removed from the rolls of the University. Provided further that no candidate admitted to the Research Degree Programme shall be permitted to proceed with the research work till such time she /he completes the prescribed course work.

Immediately upon the completion of formalities for admission in the Research Degree Programme, each candidate shall be required to submit a synopsis (proposal), on the prescribed format.

Candidates admitted to RD Programme shall be required to complete the course work in the first Semester of his/her admission and accordingly, he/she shall not be permitted to proceed with research work till such time that she/he completes the course work successfully.

Computation of Credits for Published Work for M.Tech, MPhil and PhD degree would be made as under: 

  1. 2 credits for each popular article published / paper presented in national seminars / conferences / workshops;
  2. 4 credits for each paper presented in international seminars / conferences / workshops;
  3. 5 credits for each paper in approved refereed national journal;
  4. 10 credits for each paper in approved refereed international journal;
  5. Each Department / Centre registering candidates for RD Programme shall be required to maintain an updated list approved journals for publication.

Computation of Credits for Teaching Assistantships for the MTech, MPhil and PhD degree would be made as under:

  1. 10 credits for independent teaching of a one semester course of four credits;
  2. 5 credits for working for shared teaching of a one semester course of four credits;
  3. 1 credit for every 5 hours of involvement in assessment, evaluation, examination, course development, development of reading lists, etc. (supervisor concerned to audit the workload claimed under this category and certify)
